DESCRIBING MOTION! 10-20-09

October 19th, 2009 · 19 Comments

Describing motion seems like it should be easy – but it’s actually tricky.  When scientists think about motion they use words like RELATIVE, REFERENCE POINTS, DISTANCE, DISPLACEMENT, SPEED, DISTANCE, and TIME!

Use the websites below to help you fill out the handout.  You will glue this handout into your notebook.

What is motion exactly?  What branch of science studies motion?  Check out this website for help (just read the first paragraph) – CLICK HERE!

How is motion relative?  PLAY THE INTRODUCTION, THE TRIALS, and THE REVIEWNow Click Here!

To understand motion, you have to know what reference points are. Scroll down to Point Of Reference.   Click here to find out for yourself!

What is the difference between distance and displacement?  Check out this site.   CLICK HERE!

Now you know about motion but what is speed?  And how can you calculate it? Do the LEARN SECTION, THE TEST, AND THE REVIEW CLICK HERE!

ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF YOUR NOTEBOOK DRAW AND LABEL 5 PICTURES THAT WOULD HELP TEACH THESE CONCEPTS TO A YOUNGER CHILD.  REMEMBER NOT TO GIVE ME A CUP OF DIRT!

Today we are going to begin our unit on CHEMISTRY!!!  The basis of chemistry is MATTER – What is it?  What properties does it have?  How does it react and why?

1 – You must get your science notebook.  Turn to the next blank page and title the RIGHT side CHEMISTRY NOTES!!!! Add this to your Table of Contents.

2-Discuss what we already know about chemistry!

3- Take notes on the information I give you on the RIGHT SIDE.

4-Visit this interactive website to learn about Atom and Elements.  Click on   . While visiting this website, write  facts ON THE LEFT SIDE about ATOMS, ELEMENTS, PERIODS, GROUPS, METALS, and NONMETALS. (6 facts from this website – one about each word).  Make your facts colorful and include pictures.

5 – Click on the STATES of MATTER box below and explore the website.

On the left page, write 2  facts you find from this website.  Make them colorful and include pictures.

6- Click on and learn about atoms.  On the left page, write 2  more facts you find from this website.  Make them colorful and include pictures. You should have 10 facts total now.

7-LEAVE ME A COMMENT ON WHAT YOU LEARNED TODAY – be specific.  ALSO, TELL WHAT YOU LOOK FORWARD TO LEARNING ABOUT CHEMISTRY AND WHY.

Need help leaving a comment?   First, click on the comments icon.  Next, enter the names of all your group members.  Now, add an e-mail address (you can use mine if you don’t have one     mstoddart@rockwallisd.org ).  Type your group’s comments.
